After the passing of her husband, Poykayil Appachan, founder of the Prathyaksha Raksha Daiva Sabha (PRDS), Ammachi assumed leadership at just 29, steering the movement through decades of resistance, reform, and rebirth.
Against the backdrop of caste oppression and systemic erasure, Ammachi redefined leadership from the margins—building a five-storey mausoleum for her husband as a global symbol of Dalit dignity, founding youth and women’s collectives, and guiding her people through political upheavals including the Mandal Commission era.

The movements have drawn from a wide arc of support and have led to many changes in the legal system and social relations. The movements have also led to a vigorous critique from unrepresented segments and the marginalization of regions and social groups, so there is a long way to go before violence against women is ended and women can be freed from the oppressive structures that have dominated them over centuries. Filmed in Kolkata, Mumbai, Shillong, Latur, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad and Madurai, the film meets domestic workers, farmers, mothers, ASHA workers, dancers, and organisers whose labour sustains society but is rarely acknowledged.

The story follows an elderly man who works as a scavenger in a village, surviving on a job that places him at the lowest rung of society. While working during a funeral ceremony, he gets into an argument with a relative of the deceased, triggered by humiliation and mistreatment. Unable to bear the insult, the old man quietly walks out of the cemetery.
